Welcome to The Duke of Bedford

Your Premium Lifestyle Hotel in the Heart of the Eastern Cape

Tucked up against the Kaggaberg mountain, you'll discover the village of Bedford and at its centre The Duke of Bedford.

This beautifully restored Victorian hotel, once an unsightly ruin, offers a range of accommodation options including traditional en-suite bedrooms, suites with kitchenettes and Victorian roll-top baths, and "The Quarters," spacious rooms located at the bottom of the hotel garden.

The on-site restaurant is a highlight, serving a variety of meals from breakfast to fine dining. It is well-regarded for its ‘Bedford beef’ steaks, lamb dishes, and a ballroom where a pianist sometimes tickles the ivories during dinner.

Guests have access to a courtyard, a year-round outdoor swimming pool, a gym, a sauna, and even a sunbed. The hotel also includes a stylish bar and various independent retail shops within the complex.

About Us

A Heritage Reborn

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Bedford, Eastern Cape, The Duke of Bedford is more than just a hotel, it is a landmark revived. Once a weathered relic of a bygone era, our property underwent a meticulous multi-year restoration starting in 2011, driven by the passion of owner, Tony Cotterell. Today, the original stone walls and polished wooden floors stand as a testament to South African heritage, offering guests a seamless blend of Victorian elegance and contemporary comfort.

Located at the foot of the Kaggaberg Mountains, Bedford is renowned for its annual October Bedford Country Gardens festival, and warm hospitality. The Duke of Bedford serves as the village's premier social hub, inviting travellers to experience the slow-paced charm of the countryside without compromising on world-class service.
